We have followed the unexpected success of movies that approach the subject of homosexual relationships. The Korean movie “The King and The Clown” has been seen by over 12 million viewers in a country of 47 million people with a conservative culture.
The movie “ Brokeback Mountain”, distributed in Brazil by EUROPA FILMES, same distributor of SO HARD TO FORGET , is another good example of success. The movie tells a love story between men that secretly fight to understand and maintain their relationship. “ Brokeback Mountain” gained three Oscars, four Golden Globes and it was chosen Best Movie in Venice’s Festival 2005, and had great repercussion of critic and public abroad.
Mix Brazil Festival broads sexuality issues and is focused in the homosexual behavior. Over 80,000 people participated of the last edition, the 12a, in cities like Brasilia. Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The festival is, today, sponsored by Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil and public organs of Sao Paulo. There are approximately 145 cinema and video festivals with this approach in the world. The homosexual public represents 15% of the brazilian adult population (approximately 20 million people).
The program Brasil sem Homofobia, of Federal Government, fights violence and sexual discrimination and have already realized over 100 actions in areas like Education, Culture, Health, etc, for this segment. Taking a movie of homosexual subject to screens is being in total tune with the rising focus of interest of the contemporary art. Brazilian cinema could not be out of this process: it has to recognize the importance of the subject. Television has already included homosexual couples in soap operas like “Mulheres Apaixonadas”, “Vale tudo”, “Por amor”, “Torre de Babel”, “América” and “Páginas da Vida”, producing great interest of public and discussion of the subject in the media.
