Soundtracks for Films - David Tygel

TARGET PUBLIC

Students and professionals in communications, music, video and TV and lovers of music in general.

PURPOSE

The intent of the course is the study of the relationship between music and images, basically in films, but also including video and television.

CONTENT

The first part of the workshop will be given using selections from films from the entire history of the movies, demonstrating not only aspects which are common and complementary between the two mediums, but also the evolution of sound and music in films up to the present. Various composers will be emphasized, including Bernard Herrman, Alfred Hitchcock´s partner in films such as Psycho, Vertigo, The Third Shot and International Intrigue. The film Psycho will be shown from the point of view of the music , deconstructing the original narrative and grouping together different images that have the same musical themes.

To follow: the creation, production, recording and syncronization of a soundtrack (two classes).

At the end, a workshop will be given where students will have to write a theme for a screenplay, using a soundtrack as a starting point, synchronizing afterwards the text and music step by step like in a virtual short film.

A VHS containing scenes from diverse films will be offered to the musicians (composers) of the class in order that during the course they can compose original music synchronized with the scenes using their own means of musical production.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Provided music for plays directed by Sérgio Brito, Maria Clara Machado, Ilo Krugli and Paulo Afonso Grisolli at the beginning of the decade of the 70´s.

Founded and was a member for more than 10 years of the vocal group "Boca Livre".

Composed the soundtrack for more than 20 feature films, including "O Homem da Capa Preta" and "Lamarca" by Sérgio Resende; "O Homem Nu" by Hugo Carvana; "Leila Diniz" and "For All" by Luiz Carlos Lacerda.

For the last few years has been teaching classes in music for film for musicians, students and professionals in imaging, with the project "The Music of Images" carried out more than 40 times in all parts of Brazil.

Is preparing music for the new film of Hugo Carvana "Tempestade Cerebral" .

Coordinates a study group for Music for Images, under the name of "Banda Sonora" .
